The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The PYP is designed for students aged 3 to 12. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is a framework guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas, as well as transdisciplinary skills, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry.

What is the Primary Years Programme?

The PYP represents a combination of research and experience which includes excellent practices derived from a variety of national system and independent schools from around the world. It is an international transdisciplinary programme specifically designed for young learners between the ages of 3 and 12 years. The PYP focuses on the total growth of developing a child, touching hearts as well as minds and encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic welfare. A PYP school strives towards developing an internationally minded person who demonstrates the attributes of the Learner Profile. PYP in Fairview penang is no exception!

The PYP is flexible enough to accommodate the demands of most national or local curriculums and provides the best preparations for students to engage in the IB Middle Years Programme.

The IB Primary Years Programme:

The Most Significant And Distinctive Feature Of The IB Primary Years Programme Are The Six Transdisciplinary Themes

These themes provide IB World Schools with the opportunity to incorporate local and global issues into the curriculum and effectively allow students to “step up” beyond the confines of learning within subject areas.

• Who We Are

  Inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human

• Where we are in place and time

  Inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationship between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilisations, from local and global perspectives

• How we express ourselves

  Inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic

• How the world works

  Inquiry into the natural world and its laws, the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment

• How we organise ourselves

  Inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organisations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment

• Sharing the planet

  Inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution

Each theme is addressed each year by all students. (Students aged 3 to 5 engage with four of the themes each year.)

In addition all PYP students have the opportunity to learn more than one language from the age of seven.

These transdisciplinary themes help teachers to develop a programme of inquiries – investigations into important ideas, identified by the school, and requiring a high level of involvement on the part of the students. These inquiries are substantial, in-depth and usually last for several weeks.

Since these ideas relate to the world beyond the school, students see their relevance and connect with it in an engaging and challenging way. Students who learn in this way begin to reflect on their roles and responsibilities as learners and become actively involved with their education. All students will come to realise that a unit of inquiry involves them in in-depth exploration of an important idea, and that the teacher will collect evidence of how well they understand that idea. They will expect to be able to work in a variety of ways, on their own and in groups, to allow them to learn to their best advantage.

Student Council Involves Many Community Minded Projects:

• (Phase 1) School beautification. Clean up, Essential Agreement, Library duties, painting, repairing, and students led assembly
• (Phase 2) Community Service. Food drives, recycling projects, Eco School project, fund raising.

Celebration of Learning

Celebration of Learning is a much awaited day for all. It is a student-led conference involving students and parents which is held at the end of each unit of inquiry. The students are responsible for leading the conference, and also take responsibility for their learning by sharing the process with their parents on their recently explored Unit of Inquiry. It may involve students demonstrating their understanding through a variety of different learning situations such as presentations or mini-tour of their classroom. It will also involve the students discussing and reflecting upon samples of work that they have previously chosen to share with their parents that are from their portfolio. The student identifies strengths and areas for improvement. In order for parents to gain a clear insight into the kind of work their child is doing and offering an opportunity for them to discuss it with their child, we invite all parents to attend every unit of inquiry COL. It is a form of reporting and at the same time letting students take pride of their achievements.

PYP ASSEMBLY

Apart from the regular assembly held every day, PYP students will be having an official assembly once a week led by PYP students. Students from different grades will take turns to present their understanding on the Unit of Inquiry being learned in the form of public speaking, poem recital, choral speaking, demonstration of an experiment, role play and many more. Celebration of cultural diversity is also evident in our assembly through presentation about a culture from a selected country. This promotes international mindedness among students as well as allowing international students to feel honoured in sharing information about their culture. So, kindly educate your child on the culture of your country as much as possible at home.

PYP BRAIN FOOD BREAK

The PYP children enjoy two break sessions- one from 9.30 am to 10.00 am and another Brain Food Break at about noon. Kindly note that only fruits, vegetables, nuts( not granola bars) and milk are permissible to be consumed during the Brain Food break as it is only for 10 minutes and students are expected to be in their class.

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)

The MYP is designed for students aged 11 to 16. It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement – essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders.

The MYP is flexible enough to accommodate most national or local curriculum requirements. It builds upon the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and prepares student to meet the academic challenges of the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and the IB Career-related Certificate (IBCC).

The IB Primary Years Programme:

• Addresses holistically students’ intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being
• Provides students opportunities to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need in order to manage complexity and take responsible action for the future
• Ensures breadth and depth of understanding through study in eight subject groups
• Requires the study of at least two languages (language of instruction and additional language of choice) to support students in understanding their own cultures and those of others
• Empowers students to participate in service within the community
• Helps to prepare students for further education, the workplace and a lifetime of learning

The Curriculum

The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and responsibility in their community.

MYP teachers organise the curriculum with appropriate attention to:

• Teaching and learning in context

  Inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human

• Conceptual understanding

  Inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationship between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilisations, from local and global perspectives

• Approaches to learning (ATL)

  Inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic

• Service as action (community service)

  Inquiry into the natural world and its laws, the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment

• Language and identity

  Inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organisations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment

MYP Projects

MYP projects provide students the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned in the MYP. In schools that include MYP years 5 (Grade 11 in Fairview), all students must complete the personal project. In schools that include MYP years 4 or 5, schools may offer the opportunity to do both the community project and the personal project. In schools that include MYP year 3 or 4, students must complete the community project.

• The community project encourages students to explore their right and responsibility to implement service as action in the community. Students may complete the community project individually or in small groups.
• Each student develops a personal project independently, producing a truly personal and creative piece of work that stands as a summative review of their ability to conduct independent work.
