The students of Grade 5 were inquiring into the transdisciplinary theme of ‘Who we are’. The central idea was ‘Changes people experience at different stages of their lives affect their evolving sense of self.’
In this unit of inquiry, the students made a visit to the School of Culinary Arts at KDU University College where they were taught and experienced the process of baking cupcakes. Through this activity, the students were able to learn the importance of team work, fostering relationship with friends and family, as well as enhancing self management and communication skills. They realised that cooking can be fun and educational at the same time.
At the end of the unit, the students demonstrated their understanding of the unit by choreographing a dance depicting the important relationships within our lives during the different stages of life and how these have changed us.
