[/su_tab] [su_tab title="Message From Head Of School"]Mr. Michael Chian (Head of School, Subang Jaya)
Dear Parents and Students.
Welcome to Fairview International School Subang. I must first express my excitement at returning as the Principal of this evolving school. The Fairview Network of schools have been evolving throughout the years as one of the most vibrant and pedagogically sound institutions in Malaysia attracting educators from around the globe. Every addition to our fold only strengthens our collective knowledge and skill to ensure the best is given to our students. Subang campus is well known among the network as a campus with a strong academic focus leading with a good sport following where we have participated and won games with other international Schools. This holistic approach to children development is and always have been the very heart of the International Baccalaureate philosophy, where Fairview International School is the only network of schools that is authorized in all three Programs of the Primary Years Program, Middle Years Program and Diploma Program in Malaysia.
Through out the year Subang has undergone a phenomenal overhaul to ensure our students have the best facilities that Fairview has to offer. From the new sensor urinals to restructuring of the classrooms and facility rooms like the dance rooms and rock climbing wall, the Subang campus is certainly coming alive more than ever to rival any institutions around the region. Do keep posted for future developments that are constantly being planned like our soon to be new Middle Year School Library. Subang has always been about teaching methodologies and thus is inline with the International Baccalaureate philosophy with our non – stop Professional development trainings that occur on a weekly basis. This is proven to be more than 90% of institutions around the region to ensure that our teachers are equipped with the latest best practices that are recognized to be proven effective in classrooms.
This year our students go on 2 International Expeditions which are one of a kind in the world ensuring that learning is taken from the classrooms into the real world complete with assessments to ensure that learning has taken place. From Cambodia to China, children will be expected to learn and contribute back into the community which is in line with service learning that is a major part of the International Baccalaureate philosophy.
We are always happy to hear from you and would look forward to more engagements and thank all our existing parents for the privilege of educating our amazing students with talents that range from Operatic singing to diverse skills that never cease to amaze me which have won first places in our annual “Fairview Got Talent” programs that highlight how far our children have come. To our students that have yet to be apart of our Fairview family, we look forward to meeting you soon.
[/su_tab] [/su_tabs]The IB Primary Years Programme
The PYP is designed for students aged 3 to 12. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is a framework guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subjects’ areas, as well as transdisplinary skills, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry.
The PYP is flexible enough to accommodate the demands of most national or local curriculums and provides the best preparation for students to engage in the IB Middle Years Programme.
The IB Primary Years Programme
- Addresses students’ academic, social and emotional well-being
- Encourages students to develop independence and to take responsibility for their own learning
- Supports students’ efforts to gain understanding of the world and to function comfortably within it
- Helps students establish personal values as a foundation upon which international-mindedness will develop and flourish
The six subject areas identified within the IB Primary Years Programme
- Language
- Social studies
- Mathematics
- Arts
- Science
- Personal, social and physical education
The most significant and distinctive feature of the IB Primary Years Programme are the six transdisplinary themes. These themes provide IB World Schools with the opportunity to incorporate local and global issues into the curriculum and effectively allow students to “step up” beyond the confines of learning within subject areas.
Who we are?
Inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; person, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.
Where we are in place and time?
Inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationship between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.
How we express ourselves?
Inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.
How the world works?
Inquiry into the natural world and its laws, the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.
How we organize ourselves?
Inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.
Sharing the planet
Inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and other living things; communities and the relationship within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.
Each theme is addressed each year by all students. (Students aged 3 to 5 engage with four of the themes each year).
In addition all PYP students have the opportunity to learn more than one language from the age of seven.
These transdisciplinary themes help teachers to develop a programme of inquiries–investigations into important ideas, identified by the schools, and requiring a high level of involvement on the part of the students. These inquiries are substantial, in-depth and usually last for several weeks.
Since these ideas relate to the world beyond the school, students see their relevance and connect with it in an engaging and challenging way. Students who learn in this way begin to reflect on their roles and responsibilities as learners and become actively involved with their education. All students will come to realize that a unit of inquiry involves them in in-depth exploration of an important idea, and that the teacher will collect evidence of how well they understand that idea. They will expect to be able to work in a variety of ways, on their own and in groups, to allow them to learn to their best advantage.
[/su_tab] [su_tab title="Student Council"]Aim:
Student Council is a student-based civic organization designed to help promote school spirit and leadership among students. Student Council is the heart of students’ involvement and becoming aware of student needs and opinions.
Objectives:
- To emulate the IB Learner Profile, Attitudes and Global Citizenship.
- Promote good leadership qualities among students.
- Involve all students in sharing ideas to make our school the best it can be.
- Promote school spirit.
- Give all students practice in democracy in action
- Provide service to groups in our school and community.
Responsibilities:

Student council involves many community minded projects
(Phase 1) School beautification. Clean up, Essential Agreement, Library duties, painting, repairing, and students led assembly
(Phase 2) Community Service. Food drives, recycling projects, Eco School project, fund raising.
[/su_tab] [su_tab title="Celebration of Learning"]Celebration of Learning
The Celebration of Learning is a student-led event whereby students are actively involved in presenting their work produced throughout the quarter. This event gives an opportunity to students to develop their presentation and communication skills as well as reporting on their assessments independently.
During this conference, parents are guided by their child for a mini tour exploring his/her journey of learning in and outside of the classroom. The child’s portfolio is also discussed and parents are encouraged to pose questions to their child to facilitate an understanding of their child’s learning. Parents’ participation in this event is crucial to support the children’s learning and development.
There are group presentations from students followed by the student-led conference. The Celebration of Learning is not an event for parents to discuss students’ progress with the teachers. The main purpose of holding this Celebration of Learning is to honour and to let students’ take full pride in their achievement and involvement in the classroom.
The essence of the Celebration of Learning is for students to communicate the IB PYP program effectively to parents. They help develop and support qualities from the IB Learner Profile. The students are involved in the selection of work to show parents and identify points of strength and areas for further improvement. The Celebration of Learning provides parents an opportunity to discuss with their child the work and identify ways they can offer support to achieve goals.
Role of the parents in the conference:
The parents’ role is vital to the success of the conference. It is important that parents see this as an integral part of the discussion. When sharing the child’s growth in learning the role is more important than that of a good listener – parents are actively encouraged to ask questions such as:
- Why did you choose this piece of work?
- What did you learn from this project?
- How did you get your ideas?
- What changes would you make next time?
- How has your writing changed?
- What was your role in this group task?
During the conference, the students share their plan for actions for further growth. Parents work out how they can support their child at home to achieve their identified goals for further development.
